Synopsis:
The protagonist rushes into his room in a five-story Khrushchev-era apartment building somewhere in 1980s Leningrad. His friends call and invite him to a dance party at a squat on the ground floor of an old communal apartment in the city center, reminding him to bring some of the hundreds of records he has been collecting at home ever since dropping out of the conservatory.
On his way to the squat, he nearly falls into an open manhole. He walks through the streets of Leningrad and its courtyard wells before reaching the entrance of the meeting place. Inside, he chooses a record and puts it on the turntable. At that moment, guests begin knocking at the door and the dancing starts. More and more people arrive, filling the room. The last to arrive is a girl he has liked for a long time. They exchange glances and rush onto the dance floor.
As the abandoned room in the communal apartment fills with life and dancing, police officers passing by during a weekday notice the gathering of unemployed young people. Neighbors begin complaining about the noise, and when two officers go downstairs to confront the squatters, everyone has already disappeared except the protagonist. He slips past them onto the staircase and, sliding down the steps, suddenly enters a world of musical instruments.
The chase through this world ends when the protagonist jumps over the sound hole of a guitar and one of the police officers falls into it.
When the officer regains consciousness, he discovers that he has actually fallen not into a guitar's sound hole but into an uncovered manhole, while the protagonist has escaped on a tram. Back home, frustrated by the failed dance party and the girl who got away, the protagonist smashes his records and decides to return to music — this time as a musician — by picking up a guitar.
